School Record & National Qualifying Performances Lead Highland Track at Jayhawk Classic

After opening the Indoor track season last week with four National qualifying marks the Highland track and field team notched a school record, two new National qualifying marks and improvement on the four previous qualifying times, along with 24 personal best performances all at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kansas.

Jessica Monroe helped set the tone early for the Scotties as she bested her mark from last week in the high jump with a leap of 5'07 not only bettering her National qualifying mark but tying the Indoor school record in the process. Monroe also took fourth place overall, while only one jumper actually had a better height than her.

Sedrickia Wynn improved her 60 meter hurdle National qualifying time on the season while winning the race on the day besting several NCAA Division I runners as she posted a time of 8.90 in qualifying and 8.84 in the finals. Ayesha Nelson joined Wynn in the finals and also will be joining her teammate at Nationals as Nelson posted a time of 9.14 in the finals to place seventh and qualifying for Nationals.

Jye Gillard led the Highland men's performances as he for the second straight week won his race posting the best time in the 400 meter dash out of 24 runners going 49.44. He was the only runner to post a sub 50.00 time in the race.

Mookie Rolle who competed at Nationals in the 600 last year and with a time of 1:14.19 in the 600 yard run qualified for Nationals in the 600 based on time conversion, while placing third in the race. Dionte Alston also improved his National qualifying mark in the long jump with a leap of 23'05.25 earning fourth place on the day. Malik Chatman placed eighth in the long jump recording a leap of 22'03.75.

Two other Scotties posted performances just shy of National qualifying marks as Joshua Camp earned third place in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:37.28, missing National qualifying time by .21 seconds on conversion time. While, Kilani Harvey was only .05 seconds off qualifying for Nationals in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.83 to place 13th, while a time of 26.15 earned her fourth in the 200 meter run and was just 1.04 seconds off qualifying for Nationals.

Octavia Wright raced to a time of 1:34.48 in the late 600 yard run session featuring runners with top marks entering the meet and she finished sixth. Evelin Santaclara took fifth in the One Mile run with a time of 5:39.31 and Leah Wagner placed seventh in the late session of the 1000 meter run behind time of 3:23.31.

Dahndray Holmes put together a leap of 44'05.50 to earn sixth in the triple jump. On the track Deiondre Williams and Dario Ramirez placed sixth (2:24.72) and ninth (2:48.70) in the 1000 meter run late session, while Javon Watkins and Liam Jones finished seventh (4:49.58) and ninth (4:58.47) in the One Mile run. For Jones it marks the first time in his career posted a sub five minute time in the Mile.

Highland continues the track season on Saturday, February 1st when they compete at the Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kansas.
