Tigers hold MCC bats in check in doubleheader sweep

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. The fifth-ranked team in the country, Cowley College swept the McCook Community College baseball team in convincing fashion Sunday sweeping a double-header 11-0 and 10-0.

MCC managed just five hits (four singles) in the two games Sunday while committing seven errors. Trevor Pacheco (sophomore, Pueblo, Colo.) had the only extra-base hit on the day and the only hit in Game 1, a fifth-inning double.
"We did not play well at all today, I'll tip my hat to their arms they were really good and made it tough on us offensively, we didn't get anything going," said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. "Defensively it was a different story, we played as poor as we possibly could have, we didn't have any tempo and we didn't have any effort."

Cowley improves to 8-0.

The Indians go to 4-4 on the season and will be home nine of the next 12 games starting with the home-opener Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Colby Community College. This weekend MCC hits the road for the Empire League opener in Lamar taking on the Runnin' Lopes in a three-game series with a single game Saturday and two games Sunday.

"We have some serious work to do defensively but hopefully playing as bad as we possibly could have defensively will help us realize we have some serious work to do to get better," Olsen said. "We just have to get back to practice and get some work in."

GAME 1 Cowley College 11, McCook CC 0: The Tigers scored a run in the first, four in the second and three runs each in the third and fourth innings. The Tigers had 10 hits and the Indians committed two errors in the game.
Isaac Vargas (sophomore, Greeley, Colo.) took the loss for the Indians, allowing 10 hits and eight runs over three innings. He struck out three.

GAME 2 Cowley College 10, McCook CC 0: Cowley took a 1-0 lead in the second and added a pair in the third inning, but the two teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. Cowley broke the game open with four runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh.
MCC had four hits all singles -- and committed four errors. Trey Taliaferro (freshman Coconut Creek, Fla.) had two of MCC's hits, with the others coming from Caleb Eiguren (freshman, Westminster, Colo.) and Ricardo Hernandez (freshman, Ponce, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Academy).
Jayden Bastow (sophomore, Clearwater, Fla.) was tagged with the loss for MCC allowing six runs, six hits and striking out five in 5.2 innings.
