Highland Men Squeeze By On the Road Against Hesston

After a 1-1 start to Conference play the Highland men's basketball team looked to pick up their second straight KJCCC win on Wednesday and put themselves in the top tier of the Conference standings. The Scotties did just that as the escaped on the road with a 61-59 win over Hesston.

Highland looked to the post early in the contest as Aguek Deng helped Highland set the tone scoring six of the team's first 10 points of the contest and the Scotties ultimately pushed the lead to 15-7 in a low scoring battle. That lead was cut down to two at 18-16 but Highland had an answer with some three-pointers by Kendon Knight helping the Scotties move the lead to double figures for the first time on the night at 26-16 with 3:32 left in the first half. Headed into halftime Highland held the 30-21 advantage of the Larks of Hesston.

The second half saw the low scoring affair continue but the Scotties pushed lead to double figures multiple times until Hesston pushed back and drew closer and closer getting with one-point several times overall the final few minutes. Hesston cut the lead to one-point on a three-pointer with 11.8 seconds left as Highland led 60-59 and Marquise Milton split a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game and Hesston three-point try at the buzzer came up short giving the Scotties the 61-59 victory.

Scotties shot just 36.8% from the floor in the contest but held Hesston to 25.5% from the field in the contest.

It was a career night off the bench for Kendon Knight who posted 14 points going 4-5 from three-point range, while adding three rebounds. Aguek Deng tallied another double-double scoring 14 points and snatching 11 rebounds, while Milton added 13 points with five rebounds.

The win moves Highland to 15-6 on the season and 2-1 in KJCCC action. Scotties welcome KCK to town on Saturday, February 1st for an afternoon KJCCC battle.
