Lady Blue Devils Smash Hesston in Last Regular Season Game, 79-49

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team (20-9, 8-4) crushed Hesston College (11-16, 1-11), 79-49 Feb. 27 at MCC-Penn Valley. Bennett Peck went back-to-back games with 17 points and tied her career high. The Lady Blue Devils finished in third place in the KJCCC with an overall record of 20-9 and a conference record of 8-4. Johnson County went 12-0 and Allen is one game ahead of the Lady Blue Devils with a record of 9-3.

The story of the night for the Lady Blue Devils were the three players who finished with a double double, a first for this season. Kaylyn Rogers tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds; Jada Johnson had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Jailynn Schmaltz came off the bench, scoring scored 10 points while bringing down 11 rebounds. The three sophomores added up for 57 of the 79 Lady Blue Devil points. Victoria Jones had a team-high seven assists with five points and three rebounds and was the only player who didn't record a steal for the game. Sarah Khamis tied her season-high eight points and had two assists with a steal. Symiah Bradley had six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Ti'Ye Davis converted on a 3 pointer and finished with three points, two rebounds and one steal. The sophomores who were recognized were Victoria Jones, Jada Johnson, Sarah Khamis, Kaylyn Rogers, Symiah Bradley, Kardae Gales and Jailynn Schmaltz.

Hesston was led by Kaley Phillips who tallied 14 points, five rebounds and one steal. Norika Welch finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double double. Welch also led the team with four steals. Harley Drouillard came off the bench and scored eight points with one rebound, one assist and one steal. Brittany Cato went 2 of 5 from the field and finished the night with five points, five rebounds and one steal.

For the game, the Lady Blue Devils shot 38.4 percent from the field (28-73), 28.6 percent from three-point range (8-28) and 78.9 percent from the free-throw line (15-19). The Larks shot 33.3 percent from the field (20-60), 22.2 percent from three-point range (4-18) and 50 percent from the free-throw line (5-10).

The next game for the Lady Blue Devils will be March 4 at MCC-Penn Valley for the first round of the KJCCC post-season tournament. The opponent will be determined after the remaining regular season games have been played.
