
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 3-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team opened its 2024 season in Phoenix, Arizona over the weekend and came away a 3-3 tie against No. 12-ranked Scottsdale Community College and a 2-2 tie at No.4-ranked Phoenix College.
The Lady Cavaliers were scheduled to open the season at Scottsdale on Thursday, August 22, but storms forced the match to be postponed and moved to Friday afternoon at Phoenix College.
JCCC struck first in the fifth minute off the foot of sophomore forward Maya Wallace, with the assist going to freshman defender Ashley Chaput.
The Fighting Artichokes tied the match in the 39th minute then took the lead in 64th minute of the second half.
Two minutes later Wallace struck again off an assist from sophomore All-American midfielder Sydney Puetz the retook the lead in the 78th minute from a penalty kick goal by sophomore forward Karsen Koehler.
Scottsdale managed to tie the match again in the 82nd minute and neither team could crack the net in the final minutes of the match.
Against the fourth-ranked Bears, Johnson County found themselves in a 2-nil hole with just 13 minutes left to play, but Koehler found the net in the 84th minute and freshman midfielder Tatum Bressette scored off an assist from Wallace with just 25 second remaining to secure a 2-2 tie.
Johnson County will play its third straight ranked opponent in their home opener against #10 Iowa Lakes Community College on Friday, August 30 at 6 p.m., followed by a home match against State Fair Community College on Monday, September 2 at 5 p.m.
