The fourth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team took on fifth seeded Fort Scott Community College at May 4 at the Lake Shawnee Softball Complex for the first round of the Region IV Postseason Tournament. This is a double elimination tournament, and the winner of this first game would move on to take on the winner of first seeded Johnson County vs eighth seeded Highland.
In the first game, the Blue Devils struggled from the plate only recording four hits as a team. Both runs for the home team took place in the third inning with a Kloey Dawes double down the left field line scoring Jaycee Long and Kylie Vandervoort. Sydney Becker, Annika Smith and Long were the only other Blue Devil hits. With the loss, the team must win the remaining six games to win the entire tournament and secure a bid to the NJCAA National Softball Tournament.
Alyssa Droge threw for all seven innings and allowed three runs from 12 hits and two walks. She also struck out nine Greyhounds.
For the second game, Blue Devils bounced back by tallying 12 hits and scoring nine runs. Savannah Short started things off early while recording an RBI single in the first inning scoring McKenna Lester. Lester had a home run in the third inning and added two RBI. Dawes once again kept the train moving by adding three RBI from her two hits. She had a double to left field scoring Vandervoort and Long to extend the lead to 5-0. Sara Portela hit her first career home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Hanna Acree threw for all five innings letting up seven hits but zero runs. She walked two batters and struck out one.
With the Blue Devils win, they will take on the third seeded Cowley College at 12 p.m. May 9. A win would send them onto face either first seeded Johnson County or sixth seed Allen. A loss will send the Blue Devils home.
