#2 Highlanders demolish Dodge City & top Trinity Valley
The second-ranked McLennan Softball squad closed out the weekend with a pair of wins at Bosque River Ballpark.
The Highlanders demolished the Dodge City Conquistadors for a 12-3 run-rule win in the first game of the day with Cydney Whitacre in the circle.
All three of Dodge City's runs came in the top of the first inning. Karen Galaviz and Tancayo both walked. A fielder's choice by Whitley Cash put Tancayo out at second. Anistyn Marcotte followed with the three-run homer.
McLennan took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Madison Garcia walked, stole second and scored on a double by Ally Thompson. Mickayla Tosch also walked, and Lilli Piersons came through with a three-run homer.
The Highlanders added a run in the second. Thompson doubled and Tosch singled. Piersons then single to score Thompson.
Another Highlander run scored in the third. Alyssa Moreno singled and Ellie Loveless walked. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Delanie Roeder. Moreno then scored on a sacrifice fly by Garcia.
Four more McLennan runs scored in the fourth. Tosch walked and Piersons doubled. Tosch scored on a sacrifice fly by Natalie Klenda, and Nicholson followed with a two-run homer. Moreno then doubled and scored on a single by Roeder.
McLennan sealed the run rule in the bottom of the fifth. Tosch and Piersons both singled. Tehya Pitts was the pinch runner for Piersons. Klenda singled, scoring Tosch, and Pitts scored on the throw.
In the final game of the afternoon, the #2 Highlanders defeated the #13 Trinity Valley Cardinals 8-3 with Kynlei Chapman getting the win in the circle.
McLennan scored one run in the first as Pitts walked, advanced to third on a ground out by Thompson and scored on a ground out by Allen.
Trinity Valley tied the game with a run in the top of the second. Abby Hollingsworth singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Molly Gilbert then singled to score Hollingsworth.
The Highlanders took the lead with a run in the third. Pitts doubled and Thompson singled. Allen then singled to score Pitts.
Four McLennan runs scored in the fourth. Macie Jansky singled and Moreno reached on an error. Loveless singled to score Jansky, and Moreno was out at third on a fielder's choice by Garcia. Nicholson and Pitts both singled, scoring Loveless. Garcia was out at home on a fielder's choice by Thompson. Allen then singled, scoring Pitts.
The Cardinals added a run in the fifth. Alizah Fields led off with a single, and Addison Wittram reached on an error. Fields then scored on a ground out by Kiara Wiedenhaupt.
Another Trinity Valley runs scored in the sixth as Sydney Murphy doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Gilbert.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Garcia doubled and scored on a single by Nicholson. Roeder came in as the pinch runner for Nicholson. Thompson walked, and Roeder was picked off at third. Allen also walked, and Tosch singled to score Thompson.
McLennan returns to action Friday, traveling to Pasadena for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at #19 San Jacinto.
