ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. The McCook Community College volleyball team held a 2-1 set edge but fell in five sets Friday to 11th ranked Cowley Community College.

"We played some great volleyball and then we played some not so great volleyball," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

MCC dropped the first set 21-25, won the next two sets 25-17, 25-21, then lost the next two, 18-25, 5-15.

Sophomore Mallory Brown (Colorado Springs) led the Tribe with 14 kills, one assist block, one ace and eight digs. Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) had nine kills, one assist block, one solo block, and 14 digs.

Freshman Kallie Cathcart, (Holly, Colo.) had seven kills and five assist blocks. Sophomore Kiera Barr, (Granby, Colo.) led MCC with 22 digs and also had two ace serves.

"We scouted for a strong slide hitter, but didn't execute it through our defense and that really hurt us, along with their strong outside hitter," Kobza said.

Cowley improves to 9-2. The Tigers were ranked No. 11 in the NJCAA Division II polls released Monday.

MCC, 9-6, wraps up a seven-game stretch of games in Kansas at noon Saturday in Arkansas City against the Bethany College JVs.

"We still have the optimistic mentality on this team to be better tomorrow and that's what we are going to do," Kobza said.

The Lady Indians return home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. against Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference foe Central Community College. The Raiders are ranked 17th in Division II with a 7-6 record. MCC plays in Division I. MCC will stay home and face Southeast Community College Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
