The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's soccer team took down No.5 Hill College in penalties after tying 2-2 in 110 minutes of play on Nov.18 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan. This was the first NJCAA Pool D game for the Blue Devils with the wind playing a huge role in the tight match. Wind speeds were 28 mph and gusts got up to 41 mph during the match.
It didn't take long for the scoring to start as Hill College put the ball past the Blue Devil goalkeeper, Maria Heuman, in just six minutes. KCKCC didn't let that goal slow them down as it took just 27 seconds later for Sierra Montez to score a rocket from outside the Rebels goalkeeper box, which hit the post and into the back of the net. Montez currently leads the Blue Devils in goals scored with 15. The game went into halftime tied at one apiece, and then it was the Rebels turn to have the wind at their backs. They scored first in the second half, taking the lead back in the 60th minute. The Blue Devils applied pressure on the Rebel defense but couldn't find the back of the net until the 85th minute when Laura Ginguene played a chip through ball to Jaycee Schumann who was able to get in between the Rebels left defender and goalkeeper. Schumann received the ball and found an open Cora Ellermann in the box. Ellermann was able to pass the ball with her first touch into the goal to force overtime.
The golden goal overtime rule was in effect meaning whoever scores first in one of the two, 10-minute halves wins the game. If no goal is scored, the game is decided on penalty kicks. The 20-minute overtime was scoreless, and the Blue Devils were first to take the kicks.
Ginguene shot to the bottom right of the goal but it was saved. One of the Rebel captains took the first penalty for Hill, and she skied it over the right side of the crossbar. Ellermann was next for the Blue Devils, and she scored in the bottom right corner of the goal to take the lead. Heuman was able to get a full left hand on the next Rebel penalty but was unable to keep it out of the net as Hill tied it 1-1. Amelie Max was next for the Blue Devils, and she placed it in the bottom right corner to retake the lead. The other Rebel captain was next, and she buried it in the bottom right corner as well to tie it back up 2-2. Montez was the first Blue Devil to kick it to the left side of the goal and was able to put it past the Rebel keeper as she dove the opposite way. The second to last player for Hill hit it right at Heuman, and she was able to collect it, keeping it from going in. The Blue Devils were one penalty kick conversion away from moving on as Ann Boehnlein, Blue Devil captain, stepped up and was unable to put it in as she hit the right side of the crossbar. The Blue Devils were still in the driver seat as they led 3-2. A save from Heuman would push the Blue Devils through. The last Rebel penalty taker stepped up and put it to the right side of the goal as Heuman dove the other way. But the ball was pushed too far to the right and missed the goal frame by inches.
With the win, the Blue Devils will take on No.4 Arizona Western, and the winner will move on to the 2024 NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship single elimination tournament as one of the final four teams remaining. The game will be at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Stadium Field at the Styrker Sports Complex.
