JCCC wins battle of unbeatens, 72-54 and extend home court streak to 82

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked and undefeated Johnson County Community College women's basketball team faced its biggest challenge of the 2024-25 season Saturday afternoon when No. 6-ranked and undefeated Highland Community College invaded JCCC Gymnasium. 

Freshman guard Layla Scott drained three 3-point baskets on JCCC's first three trips down the floor to give the Cavaliers a lead they never relinquished. Scott made six long-range shots in the game and wad 4-of-5 at the free throw line to finish with a game-high 22 points to lead her team to a 72-54 victory over the Scotties and extend Johnson County's home court winning streak to 82 straight. It was the third consecutive victory over a nationally ranked team. 

Clinging to a 56-49 lead entering the fourth quarter, Johnson County dominated the final period, outscoring Highland 16-5 to post the 18-point victory. JCCC improves to 18-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Highland falls to 17-1 and 2-1. 

Freshman guard Jamya McPherson provided 13 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-9 shots with three from beyond the arc, and sophomore guard Taliyah Scott added 12 points and a team-high eight assists. 

Other key performances were posted by freshman guard Tamia Smith (8 points, 5 rebounds), sophomore forward Yar Manyiel (6 points, 10 rebounds), sophomore guard Aryanna Grassity (5 points, 4 assists) and sophomore forward Aa'Mya Stacker (4 points, 6 rebounds). 

Highland sophomore forward Camaeron McNamara, who leads the conference in scoring, was held four below her season average with 16 points. Madison Brittle followed with 10 points. 

Johnson County will travel to Iola, Kan., on Wednesday, January 22 to take on the Red Devils of Allen Community College who are also undefeated at 13-0.
