Lady Blue Devils Sneak by Highland, 53-50

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team (15-6, 2-1) secured second place in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) with a 53-50 win over the Highland Community College Scotties (13-8, 1-3) Jan. 20 in Highland, Kan. Sarah Khamis came off the bench shooting a perfect 2-2 from the field, 1-1 from three and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Only Johnson County stands in front of the Lady Blue Devils in KJCCC play.

Victoria Jones offensively led the team with a 19 point and 10 rebound double double along with three assists. Jada Johnson tallied 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kaylyn Rogers ended with six points and went 2-2 from the free-throw line. Jailynn Schmaltz went 2-4 from the field and ended with four points, three rebounds and one steal. Although Symiah Bradley and Bennett Peck finished without scoring any points for the Blue Devils, both added three rebounds and one steal. Alexis Dukes brought down nine rebounds and had three points.

The Scotties had three players in double figures. Cameron McNamara led with 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Makayla Lemelle shot 4-9 from the field and tallied 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Garneisha Love had 10 points, five rebounds and one steal. Seven of her 10 points took place in the first quarter. Jalasia Hull came off the bench and scored eight points with two rebounds and three steals.

For the game, the Lady Blue Devils shot 36.7 percent from the field (18-49), 25 percent from three-point range (4-16) and 68.4 percent from the free-throw line (13-19). The Scotties shot 35.7 percent from the field (20-56), 17.6 percent from three-point range (3-17) and 87.5 percent from the free-throw line (7-8).

The next game for the Lady Blue Devils is against the Allen County Red Devils at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at MCC-Penn Valley.
