In the Jayhawk Conference, it's going to take a strong performance from horn to horn to get into the win column and the Highland women's basketball team has put back-to-back strong performances together to earn a two-straight KJCCC wins.
After topping #4 Johnson County on Wednesday at home the Scotties earned a road KJCCC win over #11 Labette winning 80-75 to move to 2-0 in KJCCC action and sit atop the Conference standings while improving overall to 16-0.
Scotties came out running and flew out to a 9-0 start to the contest and that lead grew to 22-5 just under the five mark in the first quarter and Highland held the 27-15 advantage by the end of the first. A scoreless drought partnered with an 8-0 run by Labette in the second quarter saw the Highland lead dwindle but the Scotties still went into halftime in front up 38-32 over the Cardinals of Labette.
The second half saw Labette making advances again ultimately tying the game at 43-43 and then Labette took their first lead at 45-43 but the Scotties had an answer to push back in front finishing the third quarter strong to lead 64-56. Up by 10 with just under two minutes, Labette pushed and made it a 76-73 contest with under 30 seconds left and the Scotties gathered in clutch rebounds and hit some free throws down the stretch to secure the 80-75 road win.
Highland shot 49.1% from the floor including 10-20 from three-point range and held Labette to 37.1% from the floor, while the Scotties also won the rebounding battle 40-37 on the night.
A trio of Scotties had double figures in the win as
Erin Randle posted 16 points on 7-11 shooting adding six rebounds, while
Armani Turner tallied 16 points and
Tiana Gipson chipped in 15 points on 6-11 shooting.
Highland keeps the season rolling on Wednesday, January 29
th with more KJCCC action as the Scotties travel to Hesston for a 5:30pm tilt.
