
The fifth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team took down the 12th seeded Seward County Community College 14-3 May 10 at the KCKCC baseball field for the second game of the opening round of the 2024 Plains District Baseball Championship Tournament. With the series win, the Blue Devils will now advance to Wichita and take on fourth seeded Cloud County at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium on the Wichita State campus.
Frankie Santiago scored the first run in the bottom of the first with a sac-fly to deep right field scoring Gehrig Goldbeck from third base. Brady Patterson then scored off a throw the catcher made to second base attempting to throw out Jase Woita.
The scoring continued in the second inning as Peyton Basler recorded an RBI base hit scoring Marcus Dierks from third base. Patterson stepped up to the plate for the second time in the game and hit a three-run homer run to left center field. Santiago kept the two-out rally going with a double to deep right center field scoring Woita from second base to extend the lead to 7-2 in favor of the Blue Devils.
In the bottom of the fourth, Dierks hit a pop fly to left field dropping for an RBI single scoring Patterson from third. Jackson Mervosh then came up and hit a deep ball to right field ending with a sac-fly to score Woita from third. Brady Kern hit a ground ball right above the pitcher scoring two runs to finish out the fourth inning.
With no scoring in the fifth, Freddie Nolen IV scored on a strike three passed ball in the sixth during a Dierks at-bat. Mervosh had a fly ball to center field which would drop for an RBI single followed by a Goldbeck ground ball to the second baseman which would score Dierks to make the lead 14-3.
Mason Davenport recorded the win throwing for four innings while letting up three runs, two earned and six hits. He struck out four and didn't walk a single Saints batter. Donovan Johnson came in for the remaining three innings and didn't let up a single hit. He walked one batter and struck out two.
The Blue Devils will take on Cloud County at Eck Stadium in Wichita at 7 p.m. Wednesday. This part of the tournament will be double elimination and with a win against Cloud County, the Blue Devils take on the winner of the Johnson County/Butler game. If the Blue Devils lose, they will take on the loser of the same game.
