Second half adjustments lead MCC women past Threshers

HESSTON, Kan. The McCook Community College Lady Indian basketball team won its opening match Friday in the Lark Classic at Hesston, Kan., downing the Bethel College JVs, 72-63.

"I thought we had a slow start to the game but adjusted well in the second half," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. "We put them on the foul line and gave up too many offensive rebounds in the first half."

MCC led 16-12 after one quarter but the Threshers came back to take the lead late in the first half 30-29.

Sophomore Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) led MCC offensively with 17 points including 11 in the second half.

"Makenna (Bodette) had another solid game inside for us," said Pritchett.

Sophomore transfer Paula Rosello Mateu, (Barcelona, Spain/Miles Community College) added 16 points.

"Paula came off the bench tonight and really gave us a huge lift. She made a couple big 3's in the first half," Pritchett said. "She was a game-time decision for us as she sprained her ankle Wednesday pretty bad. We taped her up and the toughness she showed was a big-time lift."

The Lady Indians also got another key Spanish contribution off the bench Friday. Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla, Spain) came off the bench and provided a fourth quarter spark scoring eight of her 10 points in the final 10 minutes of the game.

MCC was able to capitalize from the line making 19 of 22 free throws.

The Lady Indians improve to 5-1 on the season and continue the Hesston Classic Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against the host Hesston College Larks.

Next weekend the Lady Indians will play on three straight nights starting Thursday in Crete against the Doane University JVs, then Friday and Saturday for the final home games of the semester. On Friday MCC takes on Western Wyoming Community College in a 5:30 p.m. game at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. On Saturday MCC will celebrate alumni with the annual game against the MCC All-Stars set for 4 p.m.
