The Butler women used a big second half to put away Hesston by a 92-51 score on Wednesday at the Power Plant in their final non-conference game of the season.
The game was close throughout the first half. It was tied 13-13 midway through the first quarter before Butler scored the final six points of the period. Kayna Simoneau's layup with four seconds left made it a 19-13 Butler game going to the second quarter.
Butler would go up by as many as 16 in the second quarter and led 38-28 at the half.
Hesston would hit a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to cut Butler's lead to seven, but the Grizzlies scored 13 straight points, pushing the lead to 20 after a Deztinee Gooden layup made the score 51-31 with 5:17 left in the third quarter.
The Grizzlies were up 62-39 going to the fourth and eventually pushed the lead to over 40 points. Butler outscored Hesston 54-23 in the second half.
Kyla Callins led Butler with 20 points, while Taylor Birch had 18 points off the bench, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Jalise Smallwood scored 13 while Ericka Mattingly and Awreona Ransom had 10 apiece.
Butler is now 3-0 on the season and opens Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Garden City (2-1) at the Power Plant.
