
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas City Kansas (25-8) gave No. 8-ranked Johnson County (29-4) all they could handle Saturday afternoon at JCCC Gymnasium, as the Blue Devils upset the top-seeded Cavaliers 74-73 to win the Region 6 Division II Championship and earn a trip to the NJCAA Division II Tournament. The loss snapped JCCC's win streak at 17 games.
Johnson County's national tournament fate now rests on the NJCAA D-II Tournament selection committee to see if they are awarded one of the at-large berths.
Kansas City Kansas led by three at the break and increased their advantage to 12 at the mid-point of the second half before the Cavaliers went on a 12-2 run to pull with two points with just under seven minutes to play.
JCCC managed to pull ahead 71-70 with 1:19 left after freshman guard Joey Robinson drained his sixth 3-pointer in the game.
The Blue Devils responded with a basket with 26 seconds left but sophomore forward Brandon Mann followed with a layup with 16 second left to put JCCC back on top 73-72.
On the KCKCC's final possession, Cameron Williford was fouled with 10 seconds left. He made both free throw attempts for what proved to be the final points of the game.
Robinson finished the game with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the 3-point line. He also had five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
Freshman forward Tavian Cruse followed with his 14th double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Cruse connected on 9-of-13 shots. Mann finished with 14 points, five boards and four assists.
The Blue Devils had four players finish in double digits led by Ta'Veaion Washington and Camron Williford each with 15 points.
