Three From KJCCC Schools Named CSC Academic All-Americans
AUSTIN, Texas - Three student-athletes from two Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference institutions have earned the most prestigious academic award given out for the 2023-24 academic year by being named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) College Division Academic All-America teams.
AUSTIN, Texas - Three student-athletes from two Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference institutions have earned the most prestigious academic award given out for the 2023-24 academic year by being named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) College Division Academic All-America teams.
Maggie McNally of Johnson County Community College was the lone KJCCC honoree for the 2023-24 CSC College Division Women's Academic All-America team while Thanaphon Suwannapratheep and Brayden Bergkamp of Dodge City Community College both earned the honors as part of the 2023-24 CSC College Division Men's Academic All-America team.
To be considered for the honor student-athletes must be submitted by their SID (or communications liaison) for the CSC Academic All-District honors and then move on to the voting for the All-American honors. The student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.5 or better, must be a sophomore academically and athletically, and have competed in 90% of the team's competitions.
McNally becomes the sixth female student-athlete from Johnson County all-time to earn the award after earning first-team All-KJCCC honors in Division II softball this past year while being selected to the NJCAA D-II World Series All-Tournament team after helping lead the Cavaliers to a fifth-place finish and 46-12 overall record. During the season, McNally was selected as the KJCCC D-II Pitcher of the Week five times, the most of any pitcher in the conference while going 16-5 overall with two saves, 13 complete games, and two shutouts. She posted a team-best earned run average of 2.32 with 137 strikeouts in 132 and two-thirds innings pitched while holding opposing batters to a .197 average.
Suwannapratheep and Bergkamp became the first Dodge City athletes to earn the CSC Academic All-America honors in school history after strong seasons nationally in their respective spring sports with Suwannapratheep competing in golf while Bergkamp competed in track and field.
Suwannapratheep capped his Conq playing career in the biggest way possible winning the 2024 NJCAA Division I National title individually posting a score of 275 (-9) for the tournament. He helped the team finish 11th overall, in addition to earning first-team PING All-American, first-team NJCAA All-American honors, and first-team KJCCC All-Conference honors. In his two years at Dodge City, he won three tournaments including his first and last as a Conq, breaking a 54-hole school record (199 (-17)) score in his first tournament at the Southwestern Christian Invitational and then winning the NJCAA DI National title in his final tournament. Suwannapratheep posted 13 Top-10 finishes individually as a Conquistador and in the classroom had a 3.91 GPA.
Bergkamp finished his Conq career in a strong way claiming the Region 6 track and field title in the heptathlon and decathlon for the indoor and outdoor 2024 seasons. He finished sixth in the nation at the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships in the decathlon earning himself USTFCCCA All-American honors, while also taking 18th in the javelin. In the indoor season, Bergkamp finished 10th in the heptathlon at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. He established school records in the heptathlon and decathlon at Dodge City while posting a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.
