COLBY, Kan. – The first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference postseason event of the 2024-25 athletics season will take place on Friday, October 25th as Cowley Community College will host the 2024 KJCCC/NJCAA Region 6 Cross Country Championships at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas.
Fans wanting to follow along to the action on Friday will have both live results and a live stream of the races taking place with Black Squirrel Timing serving as the official timing company (Live Results) while the KJCCC Sports Network will have a live stream courtesy of Allen head cross country coach Vince DeGrado (Live Stream). Action will officially get underway with the women's 5,000-meter race at 10 AM followed by the men's 8,000-meter race set to begin at 11 AM and an awards ceremony taking place at the finish line following the conclusion of both races (approximately 12 PM).
With seven men's teams and six men's teams currently ranked in the latest United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Cross Country polls, both the women's 5K race and men's 8K race are expected to be closely contested as four of the top-five finishers from last year's women's championship race and six of the top-15 runners return from last year while the men's race will have five of the top-15 finishers from last year set to compete. The 2024 races will see new individual champions as last year's Colby's Elif Poyraz (women's champion) and Kgadi Monyebodi (men's champion) have both moved on from the Trojans after leading their respective teams to NJCAA Region 6 Division 1 titles last year.
In the national rankings, the Hutchinson women are the highest-ranked KJCCC team by holding the number six ranking in the NJCAA Division 1 rankings while Butler is one spot back in seventh. Joining the Blue Dragons and Grizzlies are 13th ranked Cloud County, 14th ranked Dodge City, and 15th ranked Garden City in the Division 1 poll while the Cowley women are ranked fifth in the Division 2 poll. As for the men's rankings, Butler holds down the highest ranking of any KJCCC team (men's or women's) with the number four ranking with Hutchinson one spot back in fifth as the two are joined in the Division 1 poll by Garden City (11th), Fort Hays Tech Northwest (14th) and Colby (19th). Cowley is one of two men's teams from the KJCCC in the Division 2 poll as the Tigers are ranked seventh while Allen is ranked number 11.
Going back to 2020, Cowley has wone each of the last four women's and men's KJCCC Division 2 Cross Country titles while Colby has won three straight KJCCC Division 1 Men's Cross Country Championships. The KJCCC Division 1 Women's Cross Country title has not seen a back-to-back winner since Cloud County in 2020 and 2021 as Hutchinson won the women's event in 2022 on their home course while Colby won last year's women's race held in Iola, Kansas.
The conference has also fared well on the national stage by accounting for three NJCAA Men's Cross Country National Titles since 2019 (Cloud County – 2019, Cowley – 2021, Colby – 2022) while the Cowley women have won two of the past four NJCAA Division 2 Women's Cross Country National Championships (2020, 2023).
Following the 2024 KJCCC/NJCAA Region 6 Cross Country Championships, teams will have two weeks to prepare for the NJCAA Cross Country Championship meet which will be held at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, November 9th with the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships scheduled to take place three days later (Tuesday, November 12th) at Dorey Park in Richmond, Virginia.
