Johnson Named MVP; D2 All-KJCCC Women's Team Announced

2023-24 KJCCC D-II Women's Basketball Awards      23-24 ALL-KJCCC SELECTIONS

With the conclusion of the 2023-34 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II regular season, the league office has announced its All-Conference Teams including the Most Valuable Player, Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. All the individual awards were nominated and voted upon by the conference coaches.

Most Valuable Player:  Jada Johnson – Kansas City Kansas Community College

Kansas City Kansas Community College sophomore center Jada Johnson headlines the award for 2023-24 after being named the Most Valuable Player of KJCCC D-II women's basketball.  Johnson finished rank in the top five in all but one statistical category. She led the conference in scoring average (20.3), total points (650), made field goals (238) and made free throws (112). She was second in made 3-point field goals (62), fourth in field goal % (51.2) and 3-point field goal % (35.6), fifth in free throw % (74.7) and total rebounds (223) and seventh in rebound average (7.0) Johnson scored in double figures in 30 of 32 games, topping 20+ points 15 times and 30+ in six games including a career high 36 against North Central Missouri. For her career, Johnson scored in double digits in 50 of 58 games and closed out her career with 1,014 points, becoming just the fifth player in KCKCCC history to top 1,000 points in a career. 

Freshman of the Year: Norika Welch – Hesston College

Norika Welch put together a memorable season for the Hesston Larks women's basketball program in 2023-24. She led the team and ranked second in the conference with a scoring average of 17.2 points per game. Her 481 total points place her in the eighth position all-time in team history.  She also averaged 7.0 rebounds which tied conference MVP Jada Johnson for seventh and 2.8 assists which ranked sixth. Welch finished in double figures scoring in all 28 games for Hesston highlighted by a season high 31 in a win at Sterling College JV in mid-November. She also recorded 10+ rebounds in five games to give her five double-doubles on the season. 

Newcomer of the Year: Sarang West – Allen Community College

Sophomore guard Sarang West proved to be a valuable addition to Leslie Crane's roster at Allen Community College this season. A transfer from Binghamton University, West led the Red Devils in scoring averaging 12.8 points per game, which ranked fifth overall in the conference. West scored in double figures in 18 games highlighted by a career high 28 to lead her team to a 60-39 win over Labette in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament. She was also her team's top long-range threat draining 44 3-point baskets, eighth-most in the conference.

Defensive Players of the Year:  Amani Henry – Johnson County Community College

Johnson County freshman forward Amani Henry not only helped anchor the top defensive team in conference, but in NJCAA Division II. JCCC held opposing teams to just 46.3 points per game, tops in country, and opposing team shot just 22.9 percent against the Lady Cavaliers, second among D-II programs. Henry has started every game she has suited up averaging 6.9 points and 7.8 rebounds while making 61 percent of her field goal attempts, which ranks second in the conference. Those numbers improved in conference play to 7.7, 8.3 and 65 percent. She topped double digits in rebounds in 10 games, second most on the team, and scored in double figures seven times.

Coach of the Year: Ben Conrad – Johnson County Community College

For the ninth time in his 16-year career at Johnson County Community College, Ben Conrad has been selected the Coach of the Year by his peers. Conrad first won the honor in 2010. He was also selected in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2021 and 2022. This season, Conrad led his team to a perfect 29-0 regular season and followed with two more wins to capture his ninth Region 6 title. His Lady Cavaliers held the No. 1 spot in the NJCAA D-II Polls for the final eight weeks of the season and were given the No. 1 seed in the 2024 NJCAA D-II National Tournament. For his career at JCCC, Conrad has won over 89 percent of the games.
