McNamara Named MVP, D2 All-KJCCC Women's Team Announced
2024-25 D2 Women’s Basketball All-KJCCC Teams
COLBY, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference has announced the 2024-25 KJCCC D2 Women’s Basketball All-KJCCC teams and winners of the major postseason honors. The awards, which were voted on by each of the league head coaches, include five individuals bringing home major accolades.
Major award winners from the 2024-25 regular season are Most Valuable Player Cameron McNamara (Highland), Freshman of the Year Layla Scott (Johnson County), Newcomer of the Year Kyleigh Scoggins (Fort Scott), Defensive Player of the Year Tiara Hozumi (Neosho County), and Coach of the Year JJ Davis (Neosho County).
Most Valuable Player: Cameron McNamara (Highland)
Becoming just the second player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in a Highland uniform, McNamara led the Scotties to a 24-4 overall record in the regular season before helping HCC pick up three postseason wins on their way to becoming NJCAA Region 6 Tournament Champions to qualify for the 2025 NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball National Tournament for the first time since 2018. McNamara led the KJCCC in scoring average with a 20.1 point per game average and ranked fifth in rebounding average with 8.0 rebounds per contest. In 13 conference games, McNamara averaged 19.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.7 steals, and 2.6 blocks per game as the Scotties went 10-4 in conference play to finish tied for second in the league.
Freshman of the Year: Layla Scott (Johnson County)
Making an immediate impact on the court, Scott finished the year second in scoring average in the KJCCC by scoring 16.3 points per contest and grabbed 3.9 rebounds per contest to go along with 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Starting 29 of 31 games for the Cavaliers this season, Scott helped JCCC go unbeaten for a second-straight regular season and qualify for their fifth-consecutive NJCAA Division 2 Women’s Basketball National Tournament.
Newcomer of the Year: Kyleigh Scoggins (Fort Scott)
Scoggins was the lone Greyhound to start all 28 games this season for FSCC, averaging 14.4 points per game (fifth-best in the KJCCC this season) while helping Fort Scott qualify for the NJCAA Region 6 Division 2 Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinals. The sophomore also grabbed 4.8 rebounds per contest and provided 2.1 assists per game while scoring double figures in 17 games this past year.
Defensive Player of the Year: Tiara Hozumi (Neosho County)
Hozumi led the KJCCC in steals per contest by averaging 4.5 steals per game for the Panthers as NCCC led all NJCAA Division 2 women’s basketball teams with an average of 23.2 steals per game this season. The sophomore upped her defensive numbers to 5.3 steals per contest in conference play and grabbed 3.0 rebounds per game against conference foes.
Coach of the Year: JJ Davis (Coach of the Year)
Davis put together a third-straight season of 20-plus wins at the helm of the Panthers as NCCC finished conference play with 10 wins this season after a 7-5 mark in KJCCC play the season before. Neosho’s previous high win total in conference play going back to 2011-2012 was seven wins as the Panthers finished tied for second in the KJCCC after being picked to finish fifth in the conference preseason poll while spending a majority of the season ranked inside the NJCAA Division 2 Top 25.
