COLBY, Kan. – Garden City Community College midfielder Jessica Newton and Butler Community College goalkeeper Rylie Schiffelbein have been named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 1 Women’s Soccer Players of the Week following the opening weekend of the 2024 season.
Jessica Newton – A big week for Lady Broncbuster sophomore midfielder Jessica Newton has the Liverpool, England native leading all NJCAA Division 1 players in goals (7), assists (7), and points (21). Helping Garden City to a 5-0 win in their season opener against Highland, GCCC went on to defeat Redlands Community College 13-2 in their second game of the year with Newton having multiple goals in both games. Of her 16 shots taken this past week, 11 were on target with seven finding the back of the net.
Rylie Schiffelbein – What can't be lost in the excitement of Butler's last-second game-leveling goal from London Ingram was the performance of sophomore goalkeeper Rylie Schiffelbein. Schiffelbein recorded six saves as she helped keep the Grizzlies within striking distance of the number-three-ranked Seminole State in a season-opening match between NJCAA Division 1 Top-12 foes. No saves were bigger than a first-half one-v-one kick save and a second-half extension dive to her left to push a Trojan shot just around the post. Due to her efforts, the Grizzlies were able to level the game at 1-1 with four seconds left on the clock. The goal would go on to be featured on ESPN's Top 10 later that evening.
