Colby Finishes 5th at NJCAA Championships
The Colby Community College men's cross country team finished fifth at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Cross Country Championships held Nov. 8 at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, Tex.The Trojans were once again led by sophomores Mike Kinuthia and Chris Speaks who both earned All-American honors with their top-10 finishes. Kinuthia placed 8th overall and covered the 8000 meter course in a time of 25:06 while Speaks followed one second behind in 9th place.Freshman Sammy Carrasco earned NJCAA Coaches Association All-American honors with his 40th place in 26:27.Other CCC finishers were Julian Sanchez-Pinto (53rd), 26:42; Adrian Guevara (55th), 26:45; Colin Grueber (65th), 26:58; and Noe Belmares (78th), 27:15."This was our best team performance this season, and although it wasn't our best team finish at the national meet, it was probably the best team performance we've had at the national meet in my six years at Colby," CCC Head Coach James Ortiz said. "We stuck to our plan and you can see by our times, they worked together and ran intelligent."Iowa Central won the team title with 62 points defeating defending champion Central Arizona College who scored 68 points. Host school South Plains College took third with 71 points and El Paso Community College was fourth with 120 points, ahead of Colby's 160 points.
