Kinuthia Leads Trojans to Second Straight Victory
The Colby Community College men's cross country team made an unexpected change to their schedule last weekend. CCC was scheduled to compete at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open on September 12 but due to inclement weather the Trojans headed to the "Romp at the Ridge" hosted by Hutchinson Community College on Sept. 13.
The Trojans were able to continue their streak after winning the Colby Invite team title last week. The Trojans topped a field of eight teams and posted another close victory over Fort Hays State. CCC tallied 28 points over FHSU with 34 points. Host team Hutchinson took third with 100 points.
The Trojans were led by sophomore Michael Kinuthia who won the event in 26:15. Last week Kinuthia was Colby's second runner. Fellow sophomore and top runner Chris Speaks, who finished first at the Colby competition, and a few other CCC athletes were held out of the meet for precautionary reasons.
"Mike stepped up," said head coach James Ortiz. "Having multiple athletes who can win races is an important factor for quality teams."
The remaining Colby runners went on to all finish in the top-10 individually. Sophomores Adrian Guevara (26:41) and Colin Grueber (27:17) finished third and fifth overall, while freshmen Noe Belmares (27:39) and Sammy Carrasco (27:42) took ninth and tenth.
"It was a good team effort today. We ran a partial team and we probably shouldn't have won today but our men came out hungry for victory."
The next action for the Trojans is the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.on Sept 27.
