Dodge City, KS-Trailing 7-1, Garden City came storming back against their rivals to the east. Unfortunately, a mistake late in the game, cost the Broncbusters.
Alexis Sconyers' error in centerfield in the seventh allowed the winning run to score, as Dodge City completed a two-game sweep with an 8-7 victory Sunday afternoon at Legends Park.
But credit Garden City, who crawled out of a major hole to put themselves in a position to win it.
Trailing 7-1 after Dodge City scored four times in the fourth, Becky Gundy's team was game. Gaby Hernandez singled home a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to five before Brittany Dowell mashed a solo home run to lead off the sixth. After consecutive singles by Vivian Lopez and Madison Brasher, Devin Hernandez bounced into an RBI fielder's choice. Madison Biller followed with a run-scoring single to right, and (Gaby) Hernandez doubled home two to tie the game at 7. But with a chance to take the lead, Kaylee Rogers flew out to right to end the inning.
Neither team scratched again until the seventh, when Ariel Denney walked Gianna Browdy to begin the inning. Caley Best bunted her over, which eventually setup Karissa Avila, who hit a sharp ground ball up the middle that Sconyers misplayed in center.
Samantha Montano notched her second win of the day for Dodge City, this time in relief-giving up four runs on five hits in two innings.
Denney took the loss for Garden City, allowing just two hits. The run that crossed in the seventh was unearned.
