Broncbusters roll McCook in game two
By Mike Pilosof
Garden City, KS-Amy Schmeckpeper didn't have to say much to her team between games. They knew they let one slip away in the opener. They made sure that didn't happen again.
Nya Chacon drilled her conference-leading 15th homer of the season, Lacey Kearsley struck out a season-high 11, and Garden City topped McCook 9-3 in Tuesday's finale at Tangeman Sports Complex. With the win, the Broncbusters improved to 15-11 overall.
And it was Chacon giving Garden City a much-needed jump start.
With two on and two out in the first, the freshman rocked Indians starter, Lana Armsbury, clubbing her seventh homer in her last games 10 games: a two-run shot that put the Broncbusters up 2-0.
It stayed that way until the third, when, after Elycia Johnson singled to center, Carly Powley mashed a double to the gap. Alexis Maestretti ripped a triple in the fourth; then scored on Arianna Griego's single to left, and Erykah Foster scored later in the inning on an error by third baseman, Ashland Baca to make it 5-0.
After McCook got back to within two after a three-run fifth, the Broncbusters buried the Indians in the bottom half. Griego singled home a run, Micaela Mirabal smashed a two-run double, and Garden City was up 9-3.
Lacey Kearsley earned her fifth win of the year in the circle, giving up just one earned run over seven innings. She surrendered eight hits. Chacon, Griego and Mirabal all drove in two runs, and Powley ripped a pair of extra base hits.
Armsbury allowed nine runs on 10 hits in six innings for McCook.
