
Garden City loses to rival Dodge City
Dodge City, KS-Leah Mafua finished with 20 points, and Georgia Gray had 15 points and 12 rebounds as No. 12 Dodge City beat Garden City, 75-52 Saturday afternoon at the Student Activity Center. The Broncbusters fell to 8-15 overall and 4-13 in conference.
The Broncbusters shot just 28 percent and were 1-of-7 on 3s. They managed just four assists on their 18 made baskets and turned the ball over 18 times. Antwain Scales' team was also outrebounded 43-34.
Bree Stephens tallied 11 points and drilled three 3's for Dodge City, which shot nearly 50 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of the game. They finished 10-of-13 at the line.
Garden City played the Jayhawk leading Conquistadors to a draw after the first and were down only three going into the locker room. But the Broncbusters were held without a field goal for the first six minutes of the third. Jada Burton's layup capped off an 18-8 run that put Dodge City up 50-37 with 1:28 to go in the period. The Broncbusters were down 10 going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter though was Garden City's undoing.
The Broncbusters were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the period before Demi Black, who finished with a team-best 22 points, sank a free throw. But at that point, Garden City was already down by 20. Jenna Rose Mafua and Stephens swished back-to-back 3s for the home team, and Burton sank two free throws to give Dodge City their largest advantage, 72-44 with 2:05 to go.
The Conquistadors, which won their 14th straight game to improve to a league-best 16-1 and 21-2 overall, outscored the Broncbusters 43-23 in the second half, turning a three-point game into a runaway.
