DMACC women's basketball team beasts Highland CC, 65-55

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Magan Christopherson of Milford scored 20 points to lead the DMACC women's basketball team to a 65-55 win over Highland Community College (HCC) November 28 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshmen Ashanti Lee of Houston, Texas, Payton Tahahwah of Tama and Jadeyn Smith of Arcadia tallied 10 points apiece as the Bears improved to 7-2 for the season.

 

DMACC overcome a 14-point halftime deficit in defeating HCC for the second time this season. The Bears, who defeated the Scotties 61-49 Nov. 13 at Highland, Kan., trailed 17-12 at the end of the first quarter and 39-25 at halftime but outscored HCC 20-6 in the third period to draw even at 45-45 entering the fourth quarter. DMACC scored another 20 points in the fourth quarter and held HCC to 10 points to come away with the win.

 

The Bears shot 41 percent, hitting 24 of 59 field goal attempts. They were 3-of-14 from three-point range and 14-of-25 from the free throw line.

 

CoFR Emily Caspers grabbed 15 rebounds to lift DMACC to a 51-39 advantage on the boards. Smith had seven rebounds and CoFR Lexi Branning of Manning and freshman Reagan Franzen of Polk City finished with six rebounds apiece. Christopherson and Tahahwah had two assists apiece and Lee and Smith had two steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will begin Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Dec. 1 when the Bears face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) at Fort Dodge. The Tritons are undefeated this season at 7-0 and are ranked 20th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. DMACC is not ranked but has received votes in the poll.
