Women’s Volleyball Competes at Triton Invitational in Iowa

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The #7 Richard Bland College women's volleyball team traveled to Iowa Central Community College over the weekend for two days of top 20 ranked matchups. The Statesmen faced #3 Kirkwood Community College (was #2 last week) and #13 Kansas City Kansas Community College (was #16 last week) on Friday, October 25th and #1 Cowley County Community College and #8 Iowa Central Community College (was #11 last week) on Saturday, October 26th. After completion of the weekend, the Richard Bland College women's volleyball team moved to 27-4 overall, and 11-0 in conference play.

 

In match one on Friday, Richard Bland defeated the Eagles of Kirkwood Community College 3-2, with set scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 16-25, and 15-12. Richard Bland totaled 81 digs, 56 kills, 50 assists, nine service aces, and one block in the match. Lovina Teel and Taelin Connolley led the attack with 20 and 19 kills, followed by Gabrielle Meador with 13. Phoebe Heath led the defense with 21 digs, Teel had 19, Connolley 13, Averi Hawtin 10, and Meador seven. Hawtin tallied 25 assists and two services aces, and Alexis Scipione added 21 assists and five digs.

 

In match two on Friday, Richard Bland dropped a 1-3 match against the Blue Devils of Kansas City Kansas Community College, with set scores of 25-20, 9-25, 18-25, 21-25. Connolley led the attack with 15 kills, followed by Meador and Teel with 13 each. Averi Hawtin assisted on 27 occasions and Alexis Scipione 11. Phoebe Heath tallied 16 digs, two assists, and one service ace in the match.

 

In match one on Saturday, Richard Bland dropped a 0-3 match against the Tigers of Cowley County Community College with set scores of 9-25, 10-25, and 17-25. The Statesmen totaled 29 digs, 19 kills, three assists, and two service aces. Connolley once again led the way with seven kills and six digs. Phoebe Heath tallied 10 digs on the day to lead the defense.

 

In match two on Saturday, Richard Bland fell 1-3 to Iowa Central Community College with set scores of 27-25, 18-25, 18-25, and 24-26. Connolley and Teal led the attack with 17 and 14 kills. Heath and Meador tallied 18 and 14 digs for Richard Bland. Alexis Scipione added 35 assists and eight digs in the loss.

 

The Richard Bland College women's volleyball team next prepares for the Region 10 DII Women's Volleyball Tournament which is hosted in Statesman Hall this Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd. The Statesmen enter the tournament as the #1 seed and will play at 12pm on Friday, against the winner of #8 Lenoir Community College and #9 Bryant & Stratton College (VA). With a win, the team will advance to the Semifinals and will play at 10am Saturday. With another win, the Statesmen will play in the Championship at 3pm Saturday.
