COLBY, Kan. - The Colby Community College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker last Saturday in overtime to Barton Community College, 54-49. A back-and-forth first half saw the Trojans go into the half-time with a 25-12 lead. As the second half started, the Trojans would go cold on the offensive end, not scoring a point in the third period. The 12-0 third-period score proved to be too much and allowed Barton to gain confidence and get their enthusiasm going. The fourth period saw a 20-19 score, pulling the game to a tie. The Trojans had a couple of chances at the end of regulation but couldn't find an answer. The overtime period saw the Cougars pull ahead for good with a 10-5 score, and that was the game: 54-49.
"Even with a good-sized lead at the half, we never got our flow going on offense and took many bad shots. When we struggle on offense, it does carry over to our defense, and that was the case again today. I saw a fatigued team not focus for long enough stretches, allowing Barton to get going. We have to be able to make the needed adjustments, and that just does not happen in some games. We compete physically but have too many moments where our focus and concentration aren't where they need to be. Disappoint because I see us struggle on the offensive end and I never imagined this group would go through this. We need to grow up take another step forward, and grow together when we hit tough stretches in the games. College basketball is tough, and winning is hard." Stated Coach Spence.
The Trojans return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Goodland to take on the Fort Hays Tech Northwest Tigers at 6:30omCST.
