COLBY, Kan. - Colby Community College fell short to Coffeyville Community College 57-38 in the Event Center on Wednesday night. The Red Ravens came to Colby with a veteran team having experience playing to the region championship game in 2022-23.
When the game started, the Trojans came out strong, looking ready to build off the last four games that saw much improvement and a conference win, breaking a 33-game skid in conference play. After a competitive match at Seward, the Trojans would continue the growth pattern. With an early lead that saw CCC playing outstanding offense with crisp ball movement, the excitement was high. With their always-present challenging defensive play leading the way and holding one of the league's top 3-point shooting teams in check, the challenge was on.
The second quarter brought a change as the Trojans saw wide-open shots rim out, and the points weren't coming our way. The defensive effort continued, but the shots weren't falling for us, bringing an uphill battle against an experienced team. In the end, the Trojans couldn't get over the hump and came out on the short end.
"After weeks of steady improvement, we felt as though it was time for that breakout game and this could have been the game. Our offense reverted back to what we looked like back in November, and that's disappointing to see. Open looks were there, and we just didn't score the ball. Our attacks to the basket were met by a sagging defense, and we didn't recognize the open shot was a mid-range pull-up. We still have a long way to go and have to keep working at it. My challenge to our group is to come out and actually love to compete and play the game. We do have expectations and standards, which is why we have improved and competed well. We won't back away from those and this group needs to take their efforts to the next level. We can be better; it takes a belief from everyone involved and the investment to work. Back at it. " stated Coach Spence.
The Trojans will travel to Great Bend on Saturday to take on Barton Community College at 2 p.m. CT.
