No. 7 Trojans defeat Cloud County 3-0 in their Home Opener

COLBY, Kan. - The Colby Community College Volleyball program started conference action against Cloud County Community College on Wednesday night. The No. 7 Trojans defeated the Thunderbirds in straight sets with the final scores 25-13, 25-16, 25-20. Colby improves to 8-1 on the season and starts conference play with a 1-0 record. The Trojans will travel to Butler Community College on Saturday, September 9th as conference play continues.
The Trojans jumped out in the first set 9-2 and did not turn back as they extended their lead in the first set to 17-6 after a service ace by Celia Mbaya. The first set concluded with another service ace this time by Camila Canedo, 25-13.
Colby continued their momentum into the second set after a Mbaya kill in the middle led the Trojans to an 8-3 advantage over the Thunderbirds. After a timeout by Cloud County at 16-7, Colby went on a 4-0 run to lead 20-7 in the set. The Thunderbirds responded late but the Trojans lead was too grand as Colby took the second set 25-15.
Early in the third set, the Thunderbirds jumped out to a 6-3 and continued to build their lead to 10-6. After a timeout by Head Coach Carey Jones, the Trojans responded with a 16-14 lead and forced Cloud to take a timeout. The Trojans finished the third set with a 25-20 final score, winning the match in straight sets.
The Trojans had a strong offensive performance, with Celia Mbaya leading the team with 13 kills and Karlotta Kattai adding 12. Amanda Caputi contributed 32 assists to help set up her teammates for success.
Colby will travel to El Dorado, KS on Saturday to take on the Grizzlies at 2 pm CT. The Trojans will return home on Friday, September 13th to take on Otero College at 6 pm CT.
