The No. 23 ranked Barton Community College baseball team held a brief 1-0 lead on Thursday afternoon at Butler Community College, before the Cougars played from behind over the final 15 innings with the Grizzlies scoring a combined 30 runs in sweeping the doubleheader 16-9 and 14-10 at McDonald Stadium.
The losses slide Barton to second in the league standings at 10-4 and 18-8 overall while Buter draws within a game of the Cougars moving to 9-5 in the standings and 17-11 on the season.
Barton will look to defend home soil Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as the series shifts to Lawson-Biggs Field for the final two games of the four-game set.
Ayden Hadley's two-out top of the first home run for his fourth of the season gifted the Cougars their lone lead of the afternoon as the Grizzlies outhit Barton 28-17 on the day.
Hunter Alvord drove in all three of his runs in game one behind his pair of home runs followed by Kyle Walker's three run producing nightcap fueling six of Barton's 13 RBIs on the afternoon.
Kyle Graves and John Connors joined Alvord and Walker's three hits on the afternoon each finishing 3-for-8 at the plate with two and one RBI respectfully.
Starting pitchers Anthony Treto (2-2) and Antonio Mendez (3-1) suffered the losses as the Cougars utilized 11 different pitchers over the 15-innings.
Barton's 1-0 lead lasted into the home first until an answered two-out solo home run tied things up with the Grizzlies breaking things open behind a nine-run bottom of the second and additional six run fifth.
In game two, the Cougars benefitted behind one of two Butler errors to draw even at 2-2 in the top of the fourth but an eight-run Grizzlies response off eight hits and key three-run home run presented the separation needed.
