Broncbusters use big sixth inning to down Ranger
Ranger, TX-Taylor Dooley followed up one strong start with another.
The sophomore allowed just one hit over 4 2/3 innings, Dawson Stutz knocked in three runs, and Garden City beat Ranger, 12-6 Saturday afternoon. The Broncbusters improved to 2-11 overall.
Brett Barber collected two hits and scored twice, and Conner Thompson went 3-for-4 for Garden City, which won for just the second time in their last 10 games.
After spotting Ranger a 1-0 lead in the first, Dooley got into a groove. He worked around a leadoff walk in the second before tossing a near perfect third. Dooley then retired the home team in order in the fourth before being replaced by Andrew Bowman with two outs in the fifth.
Meantime, the Broncbuster offense, which had been limited to just 54 runs in their first 12 games, got rolling in the fourth. Brittain Brewer drew a two-out walk, and Thompson followed with a single. Tui Amosa then misplayed a ball in right, allowing two runs to score. Another miscue by center fielder, Terry Burrel later in the inning gave the Broncbusters a 5-1 advantage.
Garden City added another run in the fifth before opening the floodgates in the sixth. Josh Errico drew a bases-loaded walk, and Stutz clubbed a three-run doubled to right-center to make it 11-1.
For the most part, with the exception of Bowman, who yielded five runs in the bottom of the sixth, Garden City's bullpen held up. Jace Reid replaced Bowman in the seventh and worked around a single and a walk to retire the side and end the game.
Ranger Starter, Kyle Hughes allowed six runs on five hits in five innings of work.
