Rockford, IL - The Bobcats traveled to the Opening Weekend Tournament in Rockford, Illinois to start their season. The OWT event was held at the UW Health Sports Factory and hosted by All-in-Volleyball. Each year the tournament is the largest NJCAA volleyball event, hosting over 40 teams and boasts multiple teams ranked in the Top 20 as well at NJCAA National Champions.
The weekend opened with a match against sister school Bryant & Stratton-Wisconsin. The Wisconsin branch bested our Virginia squad 3-1. The Lady Bobcats (VA) led by covid-Sr-transfer middle Brianna Macias's 11 kills. Covid-sr returning middle Noemi Marquez added 8 kills in the loss.
Later the same day, the Bobcats fell to #18 Kansas City Kansas Community College in another 1-3 loss. Sophomore Isabella De La Rosa Sanchez led the Bobcats with 9 kills. Freshman Raelyn Johnson led the defense with 14 digs in the loss.
On day 2, the Lady Bobcats started with another 1-3 loss, this time to Madison College from Wisconsin. Trinity Rivera posted 10 kills and a team high 17 digs, while Taleah Gayle-Nemethy added 14 kills in the loss.
The Bobcats broke the ice with a 3-0 win over Waubonsee College, also from Wisconsin. Brianna Macias led the Bobcats with 14 kills hitting .500 while Freshman Setter Isis Romine led the defense with 9 digs and 2 aces.
On the final day, our Bobcats opened against NJCAA DIII defending National Champion Owens College from Ohio. Owens swept the Bobcats in a 19-25, 13-25, 26-28 loss. Trinity Rivera led the team on defense and offense with 10 digs and 5 kills.
In the last match of the tournament, the Bobcats inked one more win before leaving town. Winning 3-1, the Bobcats led by Brianna Macias's 14 kills. Trinity Rivera followed with 10, while leading the team in digs with 13.
