GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Trinidad State Trojans traveled to Garden City over the weekend and walked away with a 3-1 record which included a dominating 3-0 sweep over No. 6 ranked Navarro College on Saturday.
The Trojans began the 2024 campaign with a solid test against No. 17 Barton College. TSC came out slow and never found any sort of momentum throughout the match as Barton came out with a 3-0 sweep over the Trojans.
TSC bounced back with a 3-0 sweep over Labette on Friday afternoon. Jaedyn Fuqua (Fr., Albuquerque, N.M.) dominated at the net with 11 kills off 19 attempts (.526) while also added six digs. The Trojans held the Cardinals to a -.032 hitting percentage while posting a .204 of its own.
The Trojans had an early matchup against Vernon on Saturday morning but managed to carry the momentum from the following evening. The Trojans dominated the first two sets, coming out with 25-17 and 25-20 set wins to take a 2-0 lead. Vernon pushed back and stole set three from TSC before the Trojans finished off the Chaps with a 25-22 and 3-1 win.
Fuqua posted a double-double with 19 kills and 23 digs while teammate Amya Speller (So., Monument, Colo.) added 15 kills and 3 blocks. Jordan Garcia (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) finished the match with a season-high 26 digs and a serving ace.
The highlight of the weekend came when the Trojans faced No. 6 ranked Navarro College. Last season, the Bulldogs finished with a 34-4 record and a 3rd place finish in the NJCAA National Championships: just for some perspective.
The Trojans came out firing on all cylinders in which the Bulldogs had no answer for. TSC finished with 33 kills to the Bulldogs 26 while also serving a seasons-best 13 serving aces as a team. The Trojans dominated the net holding No. 6 Navarro to a .053 hitting percentage while posting a .389 of its own.
Again, Fuqua led the squad with 8 kills and 11 digs while Deniz Yıleri (So., Adana, Turkey) and Speller (5 blocks) added 7 kills each.
The Trojans move to 3-1 on the season and have a quick turnaround as Amarillo College visits Scott Gym this coming Tuesday for a 6 pm affair.
