Garden City blasts five home runs in route of Lamar
Garden City, KS-Garden City took full advantage of mother nature.
With the wind blowing out, the Broncbusters smashed five home runs, Yina Ballesta Vargas struck out seven, and Garden City beat Lamar, 14-1 in Tuesday's series opener at Tangeman Sports Complex.
Vargas allowed just three hits for Garden City (7-4) marking the third straight game in which she has allowed three or less. Chiara Olison hit two long balls and drove in six.
Lamar starter, Bethany Summers labored throughout, allowing 14 runs on 13 hits in four innings.
Maria Avendano Fori got the scoring started in the first, unloading a two-run bomb off the scoreboard to make it 2-0. An inning later, Hugoton native, Kenzie Garza hit a line-drive two-run shot over the left-field fence.
In the third, Olison blasted a three-run homer to dead center before going yard again in the fourth followed by Mara Vonk's two-run homer that made it 14-0.
Meantime Vargas's only blemish came when she allowed an RBI single to Emilee Morris in the fifth, breaking a 16-inning scoreless streak. Other than that, the sophomore was flawless. She struck out the side in the first, worked around a leadoff walk by fanning the final two batters in the second, and recorded a perfect third and fourth.
Fori finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI, and Olison and Garza each collected two hits.
