Cougar women mauled by Grizzlies
It was a tale of two halves Wednesday night at the Barton Gym but not in a good way for the Barton Community College women's basketball team as the Cougars took an 84-40 mauling by the Grizzlies of Butler Community College.
Two glaring stats went against the Cougars, turnovers and shooting with each plaguing the team in separate halves.
In the opening twenty the Cougars connected for 40% shooting from the floor including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc but sixteen turnovers created a plus-15 point Butler advantage as the visitors went to the halftime break leading 44-24.
Barton shored up the miscues securing the ball to just one turnover in the final twenty minutes, but the lid was installed on the south end bucket for the Cougars in making just 4-of-33 (12%) shots from the field for a season low 22.6% aiding in the Butler runaway victory and fourth straight of the series.
Seeing their three-game win streak snapped, the loss drops the Cougars to 7-10 in conference play and 11-12 overall while Butler, receiving votes in the latest poll, solidifies its fourth place standing at 11-5 and 16-5 on the season.
Barton will next travel to Pratt Community College on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip before hosting a pair of home contests next week.
Vivian Onugha was the lone Cougar to reach double-figures with 11 points and 11 rebounds for her 13th straight and 19th double-double of the season while leading the team with 3 steals.
Brittany Simpson added 9 points, knocking down a trio of arc busters for the second consecutive game on 3-of-7 shooting. Regina Donanu contributed 6 points with Alaina Eck held scoreless but led the team with 5 assists and came up with a pair of steals.
Nine Grizzlies contributed three or more points, four reaching double-figures led by Ashley Singhateh's 19 points with 4 assists and 4 steals. Keegan Yarick added a 17 point and 8 rebound effort, Destiny Smith with 14 points and team leading 5 assists, and Kenzie Galliart contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds. Lucia Lara led the Grizzlies' plus-17 rebound advantage with 10 boards along with 6 points.
