The Colby Trojans snapped a 16-game skid with a thrilling 86-85 comeback win over the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks Saturday night at the Colby Event Center.
Colby was the early aggressor. A couple of three-point baskets and a pair of steals leading to runout dunks put them ahead 16-5. However, the Mavericks would quickly rally to take a 20-18 lead. Both teams exchanged blows the rest of the way, as Colby held a 41-39 advantage at the break.
The second half once again found Colby up early, but a late surge put Northwest Tech up by as many as nine. Strategies of both teams resulted in a lot of free throws in the final 2:30 when the Trojans trailed 79-71.
Colby hung around, and with 5.2 seconds to play, Joshua O'Garro carved his way coast-to-coast for a game-tying layup plus the foul with less than a second left. He made the free throw and sealed the Trojans' first win since Nov. 16.
Anthony Sellars led Colby with 24 points, including 12 of 12 from the free throw line. O'Garro put in 20, and Mike Bell added 16. The Mavericks got 25 points from Taiden Conner and 13 from Keyishon Miller.
Next, the Trojans travel to the Beaver Dome in Pratt for a 7:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday.
