NEW COACHES IN THE KJCCC: Men's Basketball
(KJCCC) June 29, 2020 – Three new head men's basketball coaches will make their debut in the KJCCC this season. Garden City hired Cole Dewey, Dodge City brought in Jake Williams, and Johnson County tabbed Rand Chappell as head coach.
Following are short bios of the new hires, and a short history of their previous positions.
Cole Dewey, Garden City – (GCCC Sports Information) - Dewey, 31, brings a wealth of experience back to Garden City. He spent the past two years revitalizing the program at Otero, winning 45 games including a 25-7 campaign in 2019-2020. The Rattlers were ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation and finished second in the region standings.
Before landing the job at Otero, Dewey spent three seasons working as an assistant under Hank Plona at powerhouse Indian Hills. There, the Warriors made three straight trips to the National Tournament and won 91 games. They were 33-0 entering the 2018 NJCAA Tournament before being upset by a Cinderella-Barton squad.
Prior to his run at Indian Hills, Dewey coached the 2014-2015 season at South Plains, where the Texans made it all the way to the National Championship Game as the No. 8 seed before dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to Northwest Florida State. The year before that, he was an assistant under Brady Trenkle in Garden City-propelling the Broncbusters to a 22-9 record and a third-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Campbell University.

Jake Williams, Dodge City – (DCCC Sports Information) - Williams comes to Dodge City with a combination of high level winning and excellent connections in the basketball world.
Williams has been the head men's basketball coach at fellow NJCAA Division I program University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie for the past three years. In the season that was just cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indians posted a 27-4 record and were the NJCAA Division I Region X Champions. They qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson for only the second time in school history, earning a first round bye with a #7 seed in this years tournament. After the successful season, Williams was named the Region X Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading the Indians. Williams was the first coach in school history to put together back to back 20 win seasons and he topped that by setting a school record for wins in his third season.
Prior to becoming the head coach at USC-Salkehatchie Williams was an assistant coach at Northwest Florida State College, one of the premier junior college basketball programs in the nation. During his two years at NWF the Raiders made two trips to the NJCAA National Tournament. Prior to Northwest Florida, Williams was a director of basketball operations at NCAA Division I program, University of North Carolina-Central. Williams started his coaching career as a student assistant and video coordinator at Middle Tennessee State University for current Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis.

Rand Chappell – Johnson County – (JCCC Sports Information) - Chappell was hired as JCCC's ninth men's basketball coach on May 15, 2020. He replaces NJCAA Hall of Fame coach Mike Jeffers who retired after 29 seasons leading the Cavaliers.
Chappell has ties to the state of Kansas and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference having served head coaching stints at Labette Community College (1993-95) and Garden City Community College (2012-13). Overall, Chappell has served 18 years coaching college men's basketball, compiling a 358-203 record.
Chappell comes to Johnson County after serving the past seven seasons as assistant coach to Jay Spoonhour at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. While at EIU, Chappell coached eight All-Ohio Valley Conference performers, including two first-team and four All-Newcomer team selections, and three NABC All-District selections. He also helped the Panthers to six OVC Tournament appearances in seven seasons. In the 2014-15 campaign, EIU posted an 18-15 record and won the program's first-ever NCAA Division I postseason game.
Chappell spent five seasons (1988-93) as an assistant coach at Southwest Baptist University under head coach Jerry Kirksey where he helped guide the 1990-91 team to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
Chappell began his head coaching career in 1993 in the state of Kansas at Labette Community College in Parsons, Kan. In two seasons at Labette, Chappell posted a 45-17 record, led the Cardinals to consecutive Independent Tournament Championships and reach the NJCAA Region VI Tournament both seasons.
