2022-23 All-KJCCC Men's Division II Basketball Selections
Nominated and voted upon by conference coaches, the 2022-23 Division II Men's Basketball postseason selections were headlined by Most Valuable Player Tymer Jackson from Johnson County; Newcomer of the Year Kamryn Edwards from Labette; Freshman of the Year Chris Flippin from Highland; Defensive Players of the Year Andre Norris from Fort Scott and Nick Whitlick from Allen and Coach of the Year Rand Chappell from Johnson County
Most Valuable Player: Tymer Jackson – Johnson County Community College
One of the top players in the conference a year ago, Johnson County sophomore guard Tymer Jackson is the top player earning KJCCC D-II MVP for the 2022-23 season. He is the fifth Cavalier to be selected the conference's MVP. Jackson leads the conference in total points (581) and scoring average (20.0). He has topped double figures 27 times this season, with 18 scoring 20 or more including a season high 30 in a win over Fort Scott. Jackson also leads the conference in 3-point field accuracy at 42.2 percent and is second in made free throws with 118. During the season, Jackson became just the 14th player in team history to top 1,000 points in a career.
Newcomer of the Year: Kamryn Edwards – Labette Community College
Kamryn Edwards proved to be a valuable addition to the Labette Cardinals roster this season. The sophomore transfer led the team and ranked second in the conference with an 18.3 points per game average. He scored in double figures 25 times including a season-best 37-point effort in a win over Washburn JV. He also ranked third in the conference with 72 made 3-point baskets and was fifth in 3-point field goal accuracy at 36.7 percent.
Freshman of the Year: Chris Flippin – Highland Community College
Highland 6-8 forward Chris Flippin established himself as the top freshman in the conference this season averaging 13.4 points and 8.6 rebounds. His rebound total of 258 and his 8.6 per game average both ranked second in the conference. He also made 61.9 percent of his shot attempts which ranked second as well and 13th nationally. He scored in double figures in 24 games, and reached double digits in rebounds 11 times.
Co-Defensive Players of the Year: Andre Norris – Fort Scott Community College & Nick Whittick – Allen Community College
Andre Norris was the anchor of the Fort Scott defense in 2022-23. The 6-foot-4 freshman guard is a lock-down defender, tallying 113 steals for the year, an average of 3.5 per game. Those totals were tops in both the conference and NJCAA standings. His 113 steals also rank as the ninth most recorded in a season in KJCCC history. Norris averaged 10.7 points, 3.7 assists and 3.1 rebounds. His 118 total assists and 3.7 per game average were both fifth-best in the conference. Norris scored in double figures 17 times highlighted by a 33-point effort in a win over Link Year Prep.
Allen sophomore guard Nick Whittick may not have ranked among the statistical leaders in the conference, but according to the conference coaches he could flat our guard. A lock-down defender all season, Whittick held many of the top scorers in the conference will below their season averages. He held conference MVP Tymer Jackson to just nine points when he was averaging 25 at the time. He held Fort Scott's Keryn Collins to just four points when he was averaging 19 and held Greg Moore to three points, well below his 18 per game average. He was one of the best at limiting opposing teams' best players. For the season, Whittick averaged 6.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.8 rebounds. He scored in double digits six times and his 151 total assists were second most in the conference.
Coach of the Year: Rand Chappell – Johnson County Community College
This season, Johnson County head coach Rand Chappell guided the Cavaliers to his second conference title in three seasons, a region/district championship, and a berth to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament. Johnson County stands 26-7 entering the tournament. His team led the conference in scoring at 83.3 points per game and in field goal accuracy at 47.8 percent.
