Flippin Wins MVP As All-KJCCC Awards Announced

With the conclusion of the 2023-34 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II regular season, the league office has announced its All-Conference Teams including the Most Valuable Player, Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. All the individual awards were nominated and voted upon by the conference coaches.

Most Valuable Player:  Chris Flippin – Highland Community College

Last year Chris Flippin established himself as the top freshman in the conference. This year he is now the top player on the conference, earning the Most Valuable Player award for 2023-24. The 6-8 forward out of New Orleans, Louisiana nearly averaged a double-double, finishing the season with averages of 17.2 points per game, second-best in the conference, and a conference leading 9.4 rebounds per game. He topped double digits in scoring 28 times, including nine games of 20+ points highlighted by a 30-point effort in a win over Kansas Wesleyan in November. He also topped 10+ rebound 14 times to give him 14 double-double games. For his career, Flippin recorded 53 double figure scoring games and 25 games with 10+ rebounds.

Freshman of the Year: Bubba Leavell – Highland Community College

For the fifth time in 11 years a Highland Community College men's basketball player has been selected as the KJCCC D-II Freshman of Year. This season the honor belongs to Bubba Leavell. The 6-0 guard from Hopkinsville, Kentucky averaged 14.3 points, second only to teammate Chris Flippin, and eighth overall in the conference. He scored in double figures in 24 games, highlighted by a season high 31 to help lead the Scotties to an 83-68 victory over Hesston in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament. Leavell led the conference and ranked eighth in the NJCAA with 97 made 3-point baskets.

Newcomer of the Year: Randy Crosby – Allen Community College

Randy Crosby came to Allen this season after spending a year at Tyler JC and proved to be an impact player not only for the Red Devils but in the conference as well. The Bronx, NY native led the league in scoring at 18.3 points per game, topping double figures in 18 games. Crosby scored 20+points nine times and had two 30+ point games. He also averaged 3.6 assists per game, fifth best in the conference, and 2.3 steals which ranked him fourth.

Defensive Players of the Year:  Isaiah Howell – Neosho County Community College

Isaiah Howell was the anchor for the Neosho County defense in 2023-24. The 6-7 sophomore forward was a lock-down defender for the Panthers and according to the conference coaches he could flat our guard and was one of the best at limiting opposing teams' best players. For the season, Howell averaged 12.5 points for the Panthers, second-best on the squad, and led the team averaging 9.3 rebounds per game which ranked second in the conference. He reached double figures in 22 games this season, and tallied 10+ rebounds 12 times with eight double doubles.

Coach of the Year: Brandon Burgette – Kansas City Kansas Community College

For the second time in his five seasons as the head coach at Kansas City Kansas Community College, Brandon Burgette has been chosen as the KJCCC D-II Coach of the Year. This season, Burgette guided the Blue Devils to a 12-2 mark in the conference which earned his team the conference title outright. Overall, KCKCC finished 22-10, his most season wins at KCKCC. Burgette's first Coach of the Year honor came in his first season at the helm in 2019-20. That season he also led the team to a conference title along with a region championship before COVID cancelled the 2019 NJCAA D-II National Tournament. Overall, Burgette has posted a winning record in four of his five campaigns and stands 80-64 overall.
